Standard Safety Checks.
Engine oil level The best time to check the oil is when the engine is cold, or at
least when it has been turned off for a few minutes. Oil should be added if the
dipstick reads low, but the level should not be over the full mark. Consult the
owners' manual for the recommended oil-change frequency.
Radiator coolant level
Radiator coolant should be checked only when the engine is cool. Do not open the
radiator when the engine is hot. Add recommended coolant if it is needed. The anti-freeze-coolant
solution should be replaced annually.
Windscreen washer fluid
Ensure the fluid container is at least half full. If the solution is low, add more
washer fluid and a little windscreen cleaning solvent, but don't use household detergent.
Check the washers to ensure they are not blocked and are aimed correctly.
Lights
Test headlights, both low and high beams, brake lights, including high-mounted stop
light (where fitted), turn signals and the four-way emergency flasher to be sure
they operate properly. Replace burned-out bulbs and fuses. For best visibility,
clean the headlights as often as you clean the windscreen.
Wash vehicle
This maintains appearance and reduces chances of corrosion. Use a car shampoo in
the washing bucket. Some maintenance task should be performed monthly:
Tyres
Check tyre pressures when tires are cold and keep them inflated to the recommended
pressure. Check tires monthly for cuts and excessive tread wear; replace them if
they are worn. The tread must not be worn down past the tread-wear indicators or
have less than 1.5 mm of tread depth.
Transmission fluid
Check the fluid level according to the manufacturer's instructions, and add fluid
if the dipstick reads low but don't overfill.
Brakes
Check that the brake pedal doesn't have excessive travel and that the pressure is
firm.
Check the hand brake travel to ensure that it's not excessive.
The brake and clutch fluid should also be checked and new fluid added if the level
is low.
Battery
In older model batteries, the water level must be checked; in newer models, a colour
indicator will show the battery's condition.
Wind-shield wipers
Check the rubber wiper blades for splits and cracks; replace them if they are worn
or at least annually.
Heater
Check all aspects of heater, eg, fan, demister, heat control, etc, and while you're
at it, check the rear window demister. Finally, less frequent tasks (every six months)
should be carried out:
Safety Belts
Check condition and replace if necessary.
Belts and hoses
Belt tension should be firm and free of cracks; replace if damaged at all. To test
hoses, squeeze by hand - they should not feel brittle or spongy.
Battery terminals
Should be firmly attached and free of corrosion. Ensure the top of the battery is
kept free of dirt and grime.
